the injured swan
These creative low carbon clothes are designed by five creative designers. They use old clothes to make new adorable ones. Among them, a creation named injured swan is most shocking. It is a white evening dress made from over three hundred band-aids and gauze. The back of the dress is decorated by pins. Heaving structure at the wind makes you feel heart hurting, which also reminds people of the responsibility of protecting the earth.
Some creative swimming wear are made of recycled materials for umbrella and 100% organic cottons. They are very comfortable and practical.
The environment and ethically sourced fashion will be on the agenda in London this coming autumn when leading non-profit organisations the RITE Group and the Ethical Fashion Forum run two major textile events alongside each other.
Located together for the first time at Central Hall, Westminster, London, on 6th October, the RITE Group conference on sustainable textiles and clothing will welcome the Ethical Fashion Forum (EFF) with its newly named Ethical Fashion Source exhibition (formerly Global Sourcing Marketplace), which hopes to attract up to 1000 sourcing professionals.
Current speakers at the 4th annual RITE conference, which is supported by Tesco, include Baroness Lola Young OBE, Marks & Spencer, Forum for the Future, DuPont, DEFRA, surfwear brand Finisterre, the Textile Recycling Association, and the new president of Huntsman Textile Effects, among others. Other speakers - to be announced shortly - will supplement environmental breakout sessions on textile fibre selection, GM textiles, dyeing and finishing, textile and garment recycling, and ethical sourcing.
Because the two separate UK events will now run alongside each other it offers major clothing retailers and brands a new, unique knowledge and sourcing platform as well as a useful point of call for small high street boutiques and industry professionals wanting to know more about sourcing sustainable textiles and ethically-made clothing.
"The RITE Group has an inclusive approach to textile sustainability but we purposely focus on environmental aspects,” explained RITE Group Chairman Phil Patterson. “However we also recognise that environmental and ethical issues are often difficult to separate and many of our supporters have asked us to give more time to ethical considerations. With this in mind, we are therefore delighted to partner with the Ethical Fashion Forum and firmly believe its input into the RITE event will be interesting, stimulating and above all very useful ".
Tamsin Lejeune, Managing Director of the Ethical Fashion Forum added, "This collaboration is an excellent opportunity to increase the impact and profile of both events. We hope that a joint event will make it easier for fashion professionals to engage with sustainability in their work. For the Ethical Fashion Source Exhibition, this will mean increased opportunities and access to market for the fair trade suppliers and groups exhibiting and the communities they support.”
The Ethical Fashion Source Exhibition is the annual industry trade show for suppliers of ethical and fair trade fabrics, components, and manufacture to the fashion industry, which launched last year as the Global Sourcing Marketplace.
Forged from 100% reclaimed metals, husband-and-wife design team Ashley Lowengrub and Dara Gerson's striking, one-of-a-kind designs are equal parts art and accessory. Prior to starting Alkemie, each had successful jewelry lines working with traditional metals. After learning more about the harmful social and environmental effects of mining, they sought out local eco-friendly materials.
All designs are manufactured by hand in downtown Los Angeles, California. Alkemie Jewelry has earned a devoted international following based not only on their original design appeal, but also due to their leadership as a socially and environmentally progressive company. Drawing inspiration and motivation from their daily lives, their love for culture and planet as well as their strong beliefs to do no harm, Dara Gerson and Ashley Lowengrub are true pioneers.
Alkemie is completely family-owned and operated- therefore the process of inspiration and design often comes from a mutual dialogue of teaching and learning from their daughters: “Recently we were at the beach exploring tide pools with our kids, and our older daughter picked up this huge starfish which we flipped for. The texture was amazing as was the gorgeous natural form, and seeing the contrast against her hand gave us the inspiration for a new design that we recently produced: the Starfish Cuff”.
Years of experience in the jewelry industry had made Dara and Ashley weary of the toxic working conditions and environmental impacts of the gem and fine metal industries- until one day they decided it was something they could no longer continue to support. It was then that Ashley and Dara, combining their shared knowledge of the industry collaborated to create Alkemie- a brand that would immediately pioneer and change the jewelry industry due to its social and environmentally responsible practices.
Alkemie promotes fair trade, local living wage and eco-sustainable business practices to combat the existing harmful effects and conditions of the metal and gemstone industry; including social issues such as children working in dangerous conditions to mine and mount stones, as well as environmental issues, like toxic chemicals from mines seeping into the surrounding land and severely damaging precious watersheds. Dara and Ashley knew they could continue to create beautiful jewelry within the framework of ethically and socially responsible standards, and working with 100% reclaimed metals, they have successfully merged eco with art.
Supermodel Miranda Kerr, who was raised in an Australian country town, has married her Hollywood leading man, Orlando Bloom, just a month after the couple announced their engagement.
Kerr, 27, who shot to international fame as a Victoria's Secret lingerie model, and Bloom, 33, star of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "The Lord of the Rings" movies, began dating in 2007 and have frequently denied rumors of an impending wedding.
But the couple's publicists last month confirmed that this time the reports were true and they were engaged.
Australian store David Jones, for which Kerr is an ambassador, confirmed the wedding in a statement released to the Australian media on Friday, that said Kerr had canceled her appearance at the store's upcoming spring/summer fashion launch.
"We have been trying to plan this for some time and unfortunately the only window of opportunity for our honeymoon fell at the same time as the David Jones fashion launch," Kerr said in the statement.
"David Jones very graciously released me during this period so we could celebrate an intimate ceremony and honeymoon together."
Kerr, who was raised in the country town of Gunnedah in the state of New South Wales, was ranked ninth on the Forbes' Top 10 Earning Models list this year after earning an estimated $4 million in the past 12 months.
The mayor of Gunnedah, Adam Marshall, offered the star couple a street parade and use of the town's award-winning brass band if they chose to marry in his town, but it appeared the couple opted instead for a small Los Angeles wedding.
Modern fashion is seeing a "sentimental yearning for the past" and experiencing exactly what the dictionary defines as nostalgia. While science and technology don't seem to be able to move forward quickly enough, fashion repeatedly and reliably debauches in memories and attempts to reinvent itself with the help of the past. "Sentimental looking back" is the catchword for the upcoming Spring/Summer 2011 season.
The fashion is not derived strictly from one particular decade, instead blending a kaleidoscope of eras and styles in fast motion. Opulence meets purism, austerity meets serenity, synthetic meets naturalness. Everything and nothing is allowed, there are virtually no limits, emotions determine the look. A hodgepodge of feelings made up of the classic and the newly created; a future from yesterday.
Basic Sensuality
The designers continue to play with proportions and volume. Soft, flowing, silky fabrics characterize this nonchalant look. The femininity is reduced, almost cleared away, reminiscent of the fashion from the early Nineties with its discerning purism and constructed cuts. Shoulders are defined to create a dense yet flowing silhouette. The key pieces for this look are comfortable jumpsuits of jersey and casually tailored blouses and blazer styles in pure white and pearl white, washed grey shades, light powder and sand tones and accented black.
YaYa
A romantic season with layered shades tone in tone, layered whites, layers of transparency, soft draped layers of fabric mixes and layered new twinsets. Ruffles and lace create an extra layer of sweetness to the mood. Fabrics are pure and honest. Crisp fresh or with a soft washing treatment. In a romantic season like this delivery, dresses are a must have. Sun kissed colours, the palette looks faded. They work in layers of shades. Minimal grey and Shark have a hue of purple flowers.
Fine Illusions
Alice in Fashionland: Dreamy, playful elements meet provocative power. Palpable elements from the Seventies and Eighties shroud themselves in romantic pleats, flounces and elaborate drapings. Fragile silhouettes and slender cuts are indispensable for this look, which always appears to be somewhat in opposition. Sheer skirts are decorated with metallic elements, fine knit combined with loose lacing and psychedelic prints with porcelain-like silk. Key elements include short dresses, soft cardigans, clever legwarmers and fluffy tulle in white and red, baby blue and powder or mud and rosé.
