Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) has ruled that operations at the Nan Ya Plastics Corp’s five petrochemical plants, which pose a danger to industrial safety, would remain suspended till MOEA’s final ruling in this regard.
The Ministry is still analysing the facts and legal side of the case and would soon reach a final decision, an officer of the Ministry’s Petitions and Appeals Committee has revealed.
The decision to postpone reopening of Nan Ya plants was taken at a meeting of the MOEA attended by the firm’s President Wu Chia-chau, Yunlin County Commissioner Su Chih-fen, and other county officials.
At the meeting, the parties put forward their respective case on the closure orders for the five facilities. The meeting was held following the Corporation’s plea to the Ministry claiming that the orders of the Yunlin County government were not valid and closure orders for four of the five plants should be withdrawn as functionality of these plants have nothing to do with the fires that raged at the fifth plant during May 2011.
The Yunlin County government had on May 27 ordered Nan Ya to close operations at five plants in its 50-hectare Haifeng compound facility where fires had broken out on May 12 and May 18.
The Haifeng compound incorporates five production facilities which produce several basic textile materials and petrochemical intermediaries.
In a statement to the Taiwan Stock Exchange, Nan Ya stated that the shut down of operations at the five plants is causing the Corporation to incur financial losses of no less than NT$8.4 million or US$ 289,700 per day.
The Yunlin County has ruled that the plants would have to remain closed till the County and the Council of Labour Affairs certify that the safety standards at these facilities have been properly upgraded.
If you want true functionality you cannot rely on environmentally friendly products. That used to be true for the textile industry as well, until now. The Swedish green materials company OrganoClick AB and its academic partners are pushing the frontier in terms of developing better alternatives to environmentally harmful and toxic chemicals in the textile industry.
The first two technologies to be launched by OrganoClick AB are OrganoTex; a modification technology based on biodegradable constituents conferring highly water repellent properties to cellulose-based textiles (e.g. cotton, linen, and viscose) and OC-biobinder; a biopolymer-based binder used for improving mechanical properties to nonwoven and coated textiles.
"The textile processing industry has for many years relied on chemicals that are very effective, but on the other hand are often not degradable in nature and even may cause severe effects on eco-systems or on human health. As customers are starting to realize this problem, we believe that our new products have a tremendous potential for textile manufacturers or textile product brands desiring to combine sustainable and organic textiles with functionality." says Mårten Hellberg, CEO at OrganoClick AB.
The water repellent properties of OrganoTex is mimicking natural processes occurring in plants, thereby allowing a process entirely free of substances such as fluorocarbons, isocyanates and formaldehyde, known to have either severe effect on aquatic eco-systems or being highly toxic.
The OrganoTex modification technology enables cellulosic fibres to covalently bind to a unique bio-additive, developed by OrganoClick AB. The bio-additive is biodegradable and still confers excellent and durable water repellent properties to textile products during their normal lifetime.
OC-biobinder is a new binding system used for improving certain mechanical properties, such as stiffness or strength, to cellulose-based nonwoven or coated textiles. The binders currently in use are mainly made of petroleum based substances. OC-biobinder is composed completely of renewable substances that are non-toxic for humans and are biologically degradable.
Founded in 2006, OrganoClick AB is a spin-off company from Stockholm University and the University of Agricultural Science in Uppsala, Sweden. OrganoClick AB develops and manufactures bio-fibre materials and chemical products with highly specialized functions using its proprietary OrganoClick technology platform for modification of bio-fibres.
